He is the former artiste of MediaCorp and he is very much popular for his amazing role in Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd. and he won Asian Television Awards also for Best Performance by an Actor in comedy from 1998 to 2001 and in 2003. In years 2004 to 2005, he won the highly commended prize.
He was born on 24 March 1965 in Singapore. He born to a Punjabi Indian father and his mother is Chinese – Japanese. He was brought up as a Sikh but in 1985 he converted himself to Christianity. In his secondary school years, he studied at Outram Secondary School. Gurmit is married to Melissa who is a Cantonese Chinese. This couple has three children. He making his debut in 1994 in variety show Live on 5. After this, he plays amazing and important lead role in television drama Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd. In the year 2003, he also won the Top 10 Most Popular Males artiste award at Star Awards. In November 2014 he ended up his full-time television career at MediaCorp after exactly 20 years.
