Halimah Yacob is a famous and known Singaporean politician. She is the former member of the People’s Action Party (PAP) from 2001 to 2017. Halimah Yacob took the office as President of Singapore on 13 September 2017 appointed by the Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong. She was the 9th Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore from 14 January 2013 to 7 August 2017.
She was born on 23 August 1954 in Singapore. Halimah Yacob educated at Singapore Chinese Girls School and Tanjong Katong Girls School. She completed an LLB degree in 1978 from the University of Singapore. In 2001, Halimah Yacob completed LLM degree at the National University of Singapore and was conferred an honorary doctor of law degree from NUS on 7 July 2016. Halimah Yacob worked as a legal officer at the National Trades Union Congress. She entered into politics in 2001 when Halimah Yacob was elected as an MP for the Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC). She was elected Speaker of Parliament on 14 January 2013 and became the first lady to hold this post in Republic history. She left the PAP in 2017 and stood independently in recent elections. Halimah Yacob is married to Mohammad Abdullah Alhabshee and has five children.
