She took part in Singapore Malaysia annual piano competition in 1961 and she won the scholarship to study at The Julliard School at age of 16. In the year 1971, she became the first ever women to get Doctorate in Musical Arts at Julliard. In 1981 Tan met John Cage and since they continued together their work for the last 10 years of his life. She was awarded as a US National Endowment for the Arts Giant in 1984. Leng made her debut in an instrument in 1993 at Lincoln Center at New York. After this, she purchases many pianos of different prices and features. After this, she works in Singapore music industry also and became first Singapore-born musician to play in the Isaac Stern Auditorium of the Carnegie Hall. She created her website also to increase her business and work in other countries. Tan is the featured performer for Inside the Piano on the treasures of the New York Public Library Video series.
