Anthony Chen was born on 18 April 1984 to Joan and Bernard. Chen completed his primary education from Nan Hua Primary School and later joined The Chinese High School. He completed his graduation from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. His interest in film direction developed during his high school. In 2007 Chen directed Ah Ma and in 2008 he directed Haze short movies. Both the movies got a good response from the viewers and also got Special Mention award at Cannes Film Festival. In fact, it was the first Singaporean film to win an award at Cannes Festival. After that, he joined National Film and Television School, United Kingdom. There he released several short movies named Distance, Lighthouse, Homesick and Karang Guni. In 2013, Chen directed his first feature film Ilo Ilo. According to him, it was a real-life based story. He is the writer, producer and director of Ilo Ilo.
